Companies are often eager to adopt new technologies as they enter the hype cycle, but must be prepared for a long learning curve before they can fully harness the benefits of these innovations. In addition, they must ensure that their teams are equipped with the skills they need to use the new technology effectively. Without the right skills, they may find themselves stuck in an endless implementation loop, dependent on outside vendors or professional services firms to implement new technology.

Each of the committees working on the strategic planning process developed a list of information technology opportunities and challenges facing UC Berkeley. The facilitating team clustered these responses into major categories.
